How to Salvage a Bad Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Salvage a Bad Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career With job interviews, even countless hours of preparation can lead to some iffy moments when the interview takes place. It’s impossible to fully prepare for interview unless you hold a crystal ball that predicts the future. There will often be questions or statements said that can catch one off guard, as not all job interviews play it safe by the books. Some places of employment ask unique questions to gauge a candidate’s ability to think off the cuff. Types of job interviews vary in their approach, but generally symptoms of a bad interview are universal. There are several signs that youre in the midst of a bad interview, but the solutions below provide a quick way for you to solve them and direct the interview from bad to good, by focusing on your personal branding. In this case, that brand should be confidence and competency. When Asked an Unexpected Question, Be Honest Chances are, the job interview will ask a question at some point that isn’t in the “Job Interviews 101” article you read before the interview. Beyond basic questions involving experience and relevancy, they may ask outside-the-box questions like “You’ve seen the office; what would you change?” or “You wake up to find an elephant sleeping in your backyard; what do you do?” Usually with questions like these, there is no one right answer. The interviewer is more interested in gauging your level of skill, humor and charisma in your response. By answering honestly and passionately, without over-thinking, it’s much more likely you’ll show off your real personality â€" which, if the job is the right fit, will hit it off well with the job interviewer. Never Acknowledge Awkwardness Chances are, a job interviewer has never encountered a perfect candidate during an interview. We’re all human and prone to making errors in extended conversation where we are not fully anticipating the questions being asked. So rather than admit to a mistake, like saying “this interview isn’t getting off to a good start, I’m sorry,” keep chugging along and focus on making the most of the interview’s remainder. If you finish strongly, chances are the interviewer will focus on how you finished, chalking it up to confidently finding your comfort zone rather than penalizing you for starting out slowly. Ask Your Own Questions If you’ve answered a question to your full capabilities yet the interviewer is still pausing, as if they’re waiting for more, ask them a question as opposed to further answering their question with superfluous fluff. If you cant think of a relevant question â€" such as, how do you usually handle this situation? â€" then ask something such as does that answer your question, or is there anything else I can share?” Try to avoid extended silences, even if to do it you have to occasionally take the lead. Infuse the Business’ Passionate Points Even if you have no friends or acquaintances at the business you’re applying for, it’s possible to detect a business’ strong passionate points via their website alone. For example, most company’s missions are highly apparent on their website. Some, like Patten CAT, also list their values, making it a no-brainer to focus on showing off their listed values of integrity, customer focus, ownership and teamwork in some capacity during the interview. Business websites are a fantastic resource to use to exhibit your passion and knowledge of a business before you even get offered the position. Using a business website’s content is also a great way to responsibly redirect the interviewer’s conversation if they are getting off-topic. By diverting the topic back to something professional and very relevant, you are exhibiting both passion for the company and overall responsibility. Don’t Take Questions or Responses Personally Some interviewers will be kind and charming, portraying their business as a great and happy place to work. Other interviewers will act more like a drill sergeant, with curtly complex questions and responses that make it appear as a privilege to work for them. Each business’ job interview pursues a unique method to finding its ideal candidate. If the interviewer is more akin to the drill sergeant example, expect some bluntness and criticism on their behalf. If you show an ability to deal with this criticism without getting offended, then it will come across as a positive to them. Oftentimes, these harsher approaches are done to detect whether a candidate is capable of receiving criticism and acting on it. If you acknowledge both your weaknesses and strengths, while providing some strategies you plan on utilizing to prevail over those weaknesses (like getting more acquainted with particular software), then it will come across as a definite positive to the interviewer. Follow Up As Usual Even if you think your interview went awful, continue to follow up as usual, acting as if you’re confident in the end result. Worst-case scenario they say you didn’t get the job and you move on to the next interview. But if they’re in limbo and deciding between just a few candidates and you’re one of them, showing extended confidence and passion in the post-interview process can be enough to squeak you ahead of the others who interviewed. Stumbling during a job interview can feel grueling, but the tips above can aid you in turning from a moment of awkwardness and silence into one of great strength that exhibits your passion and knowledge. You very well may end up getting the position even after a subpar beginning to the interview.

7 Questions to Ask Your Attorney Before Starting Your Side Hustle

7 Questions to Ask Your Attorney Before Starting Your Side Hustle 2016 is a year full of ambitions,  resolutions and #SideHustles. Being an entrepreneur can be incredibly satisfying and exciting, but that doesn’t mean it’s a walk in the park. Between creating a business plan, developing products and services, and securing investors, small-business owners have their plates full. When thinking about starting your side business, you should also make some time to sit down with a small-business attorney. Talking to someone before you start your business can answer questions, help you with any obstacles you see in your path and really help you understand the risks of starting your small business and how to handle them. If you’ve been thinking about starting your own side hustle, you probably have a few questions in mind. In case you don’t, here are seven questions to ask your attorney before starting on your small-business adventure: What Kind of Structure Should My Business Have? You need to decide what kind of structure your business will have before you start it. It’s tempting to roll with the punches where structure is concerned, but the reality is that without an idea of a structure, your business could get out of hand quickly. It’s important to know that if you don’t establish your business as a formal entity, you and your company will legally be the same person, in the form of a sole proprietorship â€" only you own it â€" or general partnership â€" you’re one of the owners. That means that should anything happen to put you in debt, or if you get sued, you’ll be personally responsible for the consequences. Startups are traditionally structured in one of a few ways: Limited liability company (LLC) Limited liability partnership (LLP) Corporation Limited partnership Nonprofit corporation Consult your lawyer and carefully evaluate your options. The one you choose will determine how your company is taxed, managed and owned. What Do I Need to Know About Naming My Company? Your company’s name is its reputation. It’s important to protect it. First, however, you have to know what goes into naming your company. Of course, you shouldn’t use a name that another business is using. Even if your state doesn’t have a law against it, you want to be unique, right? Each state has its own rules about the names of new business entities, and you should be careful not to step on another business’s toes when naming yours. Once you’ve chosen a name, you may want to trademark it. Your attorney can help you register trademarks for everything from your name and logo to distinguishing colors and fonts. They’ll also be a good resource should any trademark infringement issues come up. How Do I Make My Business an Attractive Employer? Employees can make or break your small business. You need to make sure that you hire the right people, and that you provide a good environment to not only attract them, but also keep them. Work with your attorney before you hire the team to implement best practices. Define company HR policy and create training materials and onboarding procedures. Figure out what kind of employees you need and create the right paperwork for all HR needs. You also need to comply with federal laws, ranging from equal opportunity employment to safety regulations and minimum wage requirements. Your attorney will help you figure out all of these aspects, and will get you one step closer to retaining your ideal team. How Do I Protect My Intellectual Property? When you develop something that makes you unique from other businesses in your industry, you want to protect those things with trademarks, copyrights and patents, all of which a lawyer will be great help with. Your name, logo, taglines, packaging and anything else distinctive can all be trademarked. Your business can also copyright something you’ve written, a feature on your website or anything else you’ve created. If you’ve invented something, you’ll want to patent it. Applying for and managing these aspects of a business isn’t always a simple process. A lawyer will help you identify your intellectual property, advise you on how to protect it and help you with obtaining copyrights and trademarks. For a patent, however, you need a special patent lawyer. What Happens if My Business Grows or Tanks Suddenly? Owning a business, especially if it’s a startup, can be unpredictable. Being an entrepreneur always involves risks. You have to be really nimble to keep up with the pivoting needs of your company. You may be pleasantly surprised by a period of unexpected growth, or you could suddenly hit a stumbling block and go under. Because nothing is ever guaranteed, talking to an attorney about these ups and downs before you launch will show you where your risks are, help you avoid them and give you the tools to maintain that balance as your business grows and changes. How Do I Make Sure My Business Is Compliant? All companies, no matter what industry they’re in, have to comply with state, local and federal laws. If you want to avoid fines, corporate liability, personal liability and other penalties, you’ll need to figure out what those laws are and how your business has to comply with them. Depending on the structure you’ve chosen for your business, the state you incorporated in and the place you actually do your business, business laws will vary. Consulting a small-business lawyer will help you discern which laws apply to you and tell you how to abide by them.                       What Happens if I Get Sued? Going into business ownership always incurs some risk, but it’s not always easy to know the risks of legal action. Obviously some businesses are more at-risk for lawsuits than others, but the preparation should be there in any case. A lawyer can help you identify risks and minimize them. If you do get sued â€" and as your business starts to grow and flourish, your risk increases â€" your attorney will be an excellent resource. He will help you know how to address complaints and lawsuit threats. Once you address these important legal issues, you’ll be prepared to jump into your side hustle with both feet.

Add A Professional Touch To Your Business Image

Add A Professional Touch To Your Business Image You should take great pride in the image of your business. Afterall, it is what defines it to the public, and other companies for that matter. Building as reputable business image can take years, with multiple setbacks along the way. But, if there’s one thing some companies seem to leave out of it all, it’s the professional image that they so badly need. Being professional is everything to a business, so knowing the touches you can add is something we’re going to help you with today. As we’ve said, building up a business image is a hard and long process, but the tips we’ve got below for you should help to ease the process. Have a read on, and see which of them you can apply to your business. Start With The Way You Sell The way that you sell your products is going to determine how many customers you bring in, and what they think of the products that you sell. If you want to achieve professionalism in this area, you’re going to have to focus on things such as the image of your product itself. A sub par image is only going to ooze an unprofessional business. If you do it yourself, off your camera phone, then you’re obviously going to get an image that isn’t of a high resolution and clarity. However, if you were to look at professional photo retouching services, you’ll find a company who can completely transform your images for you, allowing your customers to see the side of the products that you want them to see. This is the professional touch that a lot of you are missing, it’s then up to you to sell the products in a way that’s going to draw the attention of potential customers. Move Onto Where You Sell A lot of companies nowadays are online based, so putting a lot of focus into your website is essential. Your first design should never be your last, and you should constantly be looking for ways that you can improve the layout, design, and appeal of your website. If you want it to look professional, you’re going to enlist the help of a web developer to give you that edge. Neutral colours, a clear layout, and something to invite your potential customers in is usually what creates a professional website. If you have a shop floor, then the professionalism is going to come from the staff that you employ. Service with a smile, and polite staff should always be your motivation! Finish With Your Ethos Your ethos as a company is so important. It helps guide you towards a professional image, and gives you something to stand by as a company. Your ethos should always be aimed towards a high standard of quality care, products that are of a high quality, and helping others. The wider public likes to see a company that’s dedicated to the world, not just dedicated to the products that they want to sell. Getting involved in charity work as well as other ventures can really help boost that professional image.

My 2nd Entrepreneuriversary, or Why Being a Solopreneur is Bullhonkey, Special Cele-bray-she-owns Your Effective Escape Stories

My 2nd Entrepreneuriversary, or Why Being a Solopreneur is Bullhonkey, Special Cele-bray-she-owns Your Effective Escape Stories Oh, kids. Im all verklempt. Today marks 2 years since Ive become a Woman of the World (aka full-time entrepreneur), and its tough to wrap my head around. On one hand, it seems like such a long time. Ive only been doing this for two years? It seems like 5 (maybe thats because Ive been The When I Grow Up Coach since 2008yeah, thats probably why)! On the other hand, it seems like time has flown, and Im having trouble comprehending that When I Grow Up isnt a baby anymoreAw, they grow up so fast! I honestly wasnt sure what to write about today. A new I Quit My Day Job video? An update from my dark video that I posted last week (Im feeling way better and love all the love you guys gave me promise to post an update soon!)? A letter to my 2010 self (ooh, thats a good one, actuallymaybe later this week!)? A listing of my accomplishments since then? Thankfully, I got inspiration from my recent session with Stacy of Ethical Launch (whos an uber-genius, BTW), when she pat me on the back for being honest about my disappointing Clubhouse launch. Ya know, everyone always thinks that we have to go this alone. We want to be entrepreneurs, we dont have any capital, and we feel like we have to do everything ourselves. But we dont! And people dont!, she said. I dont like the entrepreneurs who we all know are super-successful, and they dont share that they have a team behind them. Its a false reality to present to people. (OK, Im paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it.) Yes, we might be (wannabe) solopreneurs, but no I have never been alone in this journey at any point. Since I started working as The When I Grow Up Coach in 2008 (before I escaped the Golden Handcuffs), Ive hired: a graphic designer for my branding a website designer a website developer 3 different virtual assistants a Public Relations rep at least 4 different coaches/consultants a sales page fixer-upper a workbook illustrator an accountant for my taxes (actually, Ive had one of these for years I just kept on using him!) Ive also leaned heavily on my husband (he designed my original site, coded the updated site, and has been my sounding board every single day), put together a group of creative entrepreneurs that all live near me who have brunch together once I month (were the Brooklyn Brunch Business Babes, natch), have the most amazeballs tribe ev-ah (consisting of my peer coaches, those who also empower creative peeps into living their passionate lives, and almost 200 clients who Im grateful Ive gotten to work with each every day) and have formed the best partnership in the history of partnerships. So, while Im still a solopreneur, theres no way that Im alone. Theres no way that youre alone, either. Which brings me to how were celebrating today (yes, it might be my entrepreneuriversary, but were the ones that are celebrating). Because I have 2 candles on my cake, I came up with 2 great cele-bray-she-owns, with 1 to grow on: An Effective Escape, the workshop I gave last month, is now a 70+ page workbook that includes the audio + video + transcript of my workshop, multiple articles, resources-a-plenty, a take-this-job-and-shove-it playlist, and juicy questions to craft your own Effective Escape. Til midnight tonight, its pay-what-you-can. No more excuses to figure out when you can leave your soul-sucking job, or what it would take to not end up in your parents basement eating Ramen noodles. Todays the day. At 1p Eastern today, you can join me for a live QA where I promise to answer every question ya got for me (and you can ask em via text or your webcam its so the future!).  Wanna know how I manage my time?  Done.  Wanna know my favorite new productivity tool? No problemo. Insert-your-question-here, and Ill have an answer for ya.  I may also have an original song written that Ill play for ya at the top of the calland by may I mean definitely, so make sure you RSVP dont be late ?? I wanna hear your take of An Effective Escape. What was the biggest factor that contributed to you making your passionate career a reality?  What would you do differently if you had to do it again?  If you still have a day job, what are you doing to ensure you have An Effective Escape?  Do you feel it’s possible to have a successful career that you’re passionate about in this rough economy? Write a post about it anytime this week, and add your url to Mr. Linky below. I wanna have a big, fat list full of Effective Escape stories/viewpoints from all around the world, because again were not alone in fighting this fight! For the rest of this week, Ill be sharing the people and platforms that make my solopreneur-ism a fallacy (so dont be mad that I didnt put a ton of links up to the peeps Ive worked with I promise to share give em their due!), so keep on coming back to learn more of what Ive done in the past 2+ years and whos helped me make it a reality. Before I sign off, I also cant not reiterate the fact that the live web-based QA Cele-bray-she-own starts at 1p Eastern, and An Effective Escape will go up to $19 after midnight Eastern tonight (but is pay-what-you-can today!). (raises a glass) To all of our Effective Escapes, and to not having to do it alone! (click)
