How to Salvage a Bad Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career With job interviews, even countless hours of preparation can lead to some iffy moments when the interview takes place. Itâs impossible to fully prepare for interview unless you hold a crystal ball that predicts the future. There will often be questions or statements said that can catch one off guard, as not all job interviews play it safe by the books. Some places of employment ask unique questions to gauge a candidateâs ability to think off the cuff. Types of job interviews vary in their approach, but generally symptoms of a bad interview are universal. There are several signs that youre in the midst of a bad interview, but the solutions below provide a quick way for you to solve them and direct the interview from bad to good, by focusing on your personal branding. In this case, that brand should be confidence and competency. When Asked an Unexpected Question, Be Honest Chances are, the job interview will ask a question at some point that isnât in the âJob Interviews 101â article you read before the interview. Beyond basic questions involving experience and relevancy, they may ask outside-the-box questions like âYouâve seen the office; what would you change?â or âYou wake up to find an elephant sleeping in your backyard; what do you do?â Usually with questions like these, there is no one right answer. The interviewer is more interested in gauging your level of skill, humor and charisma in your response. Infuse the Businessâ Passionate Points Even if you have no friends or acquaintances at the business youâre applying for, itâs possible to detect a businessâ strong passionate points via their website alone. For example, most companyâs missions are highly apparent on their website. Some, like Patten CAT, also list their values, making it a no-brainer to focus on showing off their listed values of integrity, customer focus, ownership and teamwork in some capacity during the interview. Business websites are a fantastic resource to use to exhibit your passion and knowledge of a business before you even get offered the position. By diverting the topic back to something professional and very relevant, you are exhibiting both passion for the company and overall responsibility. Donât Take Questions or Responses Personally Some interviewers will be kind and charming, portraying their business as a great and happy place to work. Other interviewers will act more like a drill sergeant, with curtly complex questions and responses that make it appear as a privilege to work for them. Each businessâ job interview pursues a unique method to finding its ideal candidate. If the interviewer is more akin to the drill sergeant example, expect some bluntness and criticism on their behalf. If you show an ability to deal with this criticism without getting offended, then it will come across as a positive to them. Oftentimes, these harsher approaches are done to detect whether a candidate is capable of receiving criticism and acting on it. My 2nd Entrepreneuriversary, or Why Being a Solopreneur is Bullhonkey, Special Cele-bray-she-owns Your Effective Escape Stories Oh, kids. Im all verklempt. Today marks 2 years since Ive become a Woman of the World (aka full-time entrepreneur), and its tough to wrap my head around. On one hand, it seems like such a long time. Ive only been doing this for two years? It seems like 5 (maybe thats because Ive been The When I Grow Up Coach since 2008yeah, thats probably why)! On the other hand, it seems like time has flown, and Im having trouble comprehending that When I Grow Up isnt a baby anymoreAw, they grow up so fast! I honestly wasnt sure what to write about today. A new I Quit My Day Job video? An update from my dark video that I posted last week (Im feeling way better and love all the love you guys gave me promise to post an update soon!)? A letter to my 2010 self (ooh, thats a good one, actuallymaybe later this week!)? A listing of my accomplishments since then? Thankfully, I got inspiration from my recent session with Stacy of Ethical Launch (whos an uber-genius, BTW), when she pat me on the back for being honest about my disappointing Clubhouse launch. Ya know, everyone always thinks that we have to go this alone. We want to be entrepreneurs, we dont have any capital, and we feel like we have to do everything ourselves. But we dont! And people dont!, she said. I dont like the entrepreneurs who we all know are super-successful, and they dont share that they have a team behind them. Its a false reality to present to people. (OK, Im paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it.) Yes, we might be (wannabe) solopreneurs, but no I have never been alone in this journey at any point. Since I started working as The When I Grow Up Coach in 2008 (before I escaped the Golden Handcuffs), Ive hired: a graphic designer for my branding a website designer a website developer 3 different virtual assistants a Public Relations rep at least 4 different coaches/consultants a sales page fixer-upper a workbook illustrator an accountant for my taxes (actually, Ive had one of these for years I just kept on using him!) Ive also leaned heavily on my husband (he designed my original site, coded the updated site, and has been my sounding board every single day), put together a group of creative entrepreneurs that all live near me who have brunch together once I month (were the Brooklyn Brunch Business Babes, natch), have the most amazeballs tribe ev-ah (consisting of my peer coaches, those who also empower creative peeps into living their passionate lives, and almost 200 clients who Im grateful Ive gotten to work with each every day) and have formed the best partnership in the history of partnerships. So, while Im still a solopreneur, theres no way that Im alone. Theres no way that youre alone, either. Which brings me to how were celebrating today (yes, it might be my entrepreneuriversary, but were the ones that are celebrating). Because I have 2 candles on my cake, I came up with 2 great cele-bray-she-owns, with 1 to grow on: An Effective Escape, the workshop I gave last month, is now a 70+ page workbook that includes the audio + video + transcript of my workshop, multiple articles, resources-a-plenty, a take-this-job-and-shove-it playlist, and juicy questions to craft your own Effective Escape. Til midnight tonight, its pay-what-you-can. No more excuses to figure out when you can leave your soul-sucking job, or what it would take to not end up in your parents basement eating Ramen noodles.
